About the project

South Corse Pilots & North Sardinia Pilots
Accordingly, as for IMO RESOLUTION (NAV 57) from july the 1st 2014, Masters of vessels passing through the Strait are highly recommended to avail themselves of the services of a qualified pilot.
The Strait of Bonifacio, located between Corsica and Sardinia, is about 20miles long and divides the Tyrrhenia Sea from western Mediterranean Sea. This sea corridor is notorious among seamen for its difficult weather conditions, as well as its currents, shoals, and other obstacles.
The Mouth of Bonifacio and its surrounding area comprises one of the most outstanding zones in the Mediterranean in terms of biodiversity. An international Marine Park, of about 80.000 km2, spread from the Southern part of Corsica to the Northen part of Sardinia. This area enjoys exceptional ecological features which require strict obligation of protection.
By virtue of the free passage into internationals waters, it is 4500 ships a year which cross this strait with numerous fishing boats, leisure crafts and ferries between the two islands.
In 1993, France and Italy banned the passage of ships flying French and Italian flags. However, this regulation does not apply to foreign vessels, by virtue of the international status of the straits.
